CAL SOUTH PRO+ ODP RETURNS TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA WITH SIX ODP WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS

January 11, 2018

Cal South PRO+ ODP had another successful campaign in the 2018 US Youth Soccer ODP West Championships in Phoenix, returning home with six out of a possible 10 championship titles. A total of 10 Cal South teams represented Southern California in the Region IV Tournament, with all teams moving on to the knockout round.

The 2018 US Youth Soccer ODP West Championship teams included the Cal South 2001 Girls, 2002 Boys, 2003 Girls, 2004 Boys, 2005 Boys and the 2005 Girls. Meanwhile, the 2002 Girls and 2001 Boys finished as Finalists in their respective divisions.

With the six championships, Cal South concluded the tournament as the top performing association and bumped up its historic total to 77 ODP West Championships.

The ODP West Championships kicked off on Friday, with Cal South proving its dominance with an unbeaten streak of 14 wins and one draw. The following day, Cal South earned the same streak, with the 2001 Boys coming close to earning the final win against Arizona. Despite all Cal South teams cheering them on in the sidelines, the host team had a home field advantage and battled back for a scoreless draw.

In the ODP West Championship Semifinals, eight Cal South teams moved on to the finals, with the 2003 Boys and 2004 Girls being ousted from the competition. Finals Day kicked off with a California Showdown in the Boys 2005 Division between Cal South and Cal North. Although Cal North put up a battle, it was the Southern California group that came out on top and clinched the first championship of the day.

Shortly thereafter, the 2004 Boys defeated New Mexico 6-0, while the 2002 Boys had to take the game to penalty kicks to resolve the match in favor of Cal South. In the most dramatic games of the day, the 2003 Girls clinched an ODP West Championship title after a series of penalty kicks with Washington. Like the 2003 Girls, the 2002 Girls matched up against Washington, also going to penalty kicks. However, with one missed shot from Cal South, Washington took the game for a 5-4 final.

By the end of the tournament, the Cal South 2001 Girls Team finished the tournament without any goals against. Like the 2001 Girls, the 2002 Boys went the full tournament without allowing any goals, including the final, where after a scoreless draw in regulation and extra time, the teams went on to penalty kicks where Cal South topped Arizona.
